Focus:

Students will explore atomic structure, focusing on three increasingly complex concepts. First, concepts of mass, charge, and location of subatomic particles (protons, neutrons, and electrons) within atoms is explored, leading to interpreting atomic number and atomic mass from a periodic table. Second, the presence of isotopes of elements is explored and average atomic mass calculated. The final concept explored is electron configurations – using the classic 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ notation, the connection will be made between electron configurations and the form of the periodic table, with emphasis on identifying valence electrons.
